How we calculate this match

The day sign and tone come from the Tzolk’in using the GMT (Goodman-Martinez-Thompson) correlation, constant 584283 — the same one the rest of the site uses, so your day sign never changes from one page to another. The relationships between signs (analog, occult, antipode and guide) are the ones from the Mayan oracle applied to the classic order of the twenty day signs. The score is a deterministic calculation: the same two signs always return the same number, whichever order you enter them in.

How it works

  1. Each date becomes a Tzolk’in kin: a day sign (one of the twenty) and a trecena tone (1 to 13). We use the GMT 584283 correlation.
  2. Between the two signs there is a fixed relationship from the Mayan oracle: same sign, analog (adding to 19), occult (adding to 21), antipode (ten apart) or none of the three. That relationship sets the base score.
  3. The base is then adjusted by colour family, element and the traits of each sign, and finally by each person’s tone: the same tone, tones adding to 14 and adjacent tones do not read the same.
  4. The result is deterministic and symmetric: the same two dates always give the same number, and it makes no difference which one you enter first.

Which correlation do you use to work out the day sign?

The GMT (Goodman-Martinez-Thompson) correlation, constant 584283, which is the one Mayanists use. If another calculator gives you a different sign, it is using a different correlation: with Martin and Skidmore (584286) your sign shifts by three positions, and with the Dreamspell count the gap grows because that system skips 29 February.

Is Mayan compatibility the same as zodiac compatibility?

No. Western astrology compares sun signs by their position on the wheel and the aspects between them. Here we compare Tzolk’in day signs by their relationship in the Mayan oracle: analog, occult, antipode or none. They are two different systems and can read the same couple differently.

Does a low score mean it will not work?

No. The lowest scores go to antipode signs, and the tradition reads those as the bond that teaches the most: the other person shows you exactly what you would rather not look at. Plenty of long marriages are antipodes. What a low score reduces is how much comes easily, not how far the relationship can go.

Do you need the birth time?

No. The Tzolk’in counts whole days, so the date is enough. Only if you were born very close to midnight is it worth also checking the day before and the day after.

Do you store the dates I enter?
