How to read tarot for beginners: complete step-by-step guide

Learn to read tarot from scratch. Beginner guide with basic concepts, spread types, and how to connect with your cards.

Your first step into the world of tarot

Tarot doesn't require special powers. It's a tool for reflection and self-knowledge that anyone can learn to use. The most important thing isn't memorizing meanings but developing your intuition and personal connection with the cards.

A standard tarot deck has 78 cards: 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana. As a beginner, focus first on the 22 Major Arcana.

The 22 Major Arcana

The Major Arcana represent universal archetypes and important life lessons. They range from The Fool (number 0) to The World (number 21), representing a complete spiritual journey.

Beginning cards: The Fool, The Magician, The High Priestess, The Empress, The Emperor. Development cards: The Hierophant, The Lovers, The Chariot, Strength, The Hermit. Transformation cards: Wheel of Fortune, Justice, The Hanged Man, Death, Temperance. Awakening cards: The Devil, The Tower, The Star, The Moon, The Sun, Judgement, The World.

Your first spread: the daily card

The simplest and most powerful spread for beginners is the daily card. Each morning, shuffle your cards while thinking about your day. Pull one card. This card is your theme, lesson, or energy for the day.

Don't try to memorize the meaning. Look at the image. What do you feel? What do you see? That's your reading.

Three essential spreads to start

Past-Present-Future: Three cards in a row. The first reveals past influences, the second your current situation, the third where you're heading.

Situation-Obstacle-Advice: Three cards that help you make decisions. What's happening, what's blocking you, what you should do.

Mind-Body-Spirit: Three cards revealing your holistic state.

Tips for beginners

Keep a tarot journal. Each day, write down your card and your interpretation. At the end of the week, review: you'll start noticing patterns and your intuition will strengthen.

Don't fear cards like Death or The Tower. No card is inherently negative. Death means transformation; The Tower means liberation.
